Negotiation is about grafting a relationship by finding ways to give and take.

1. Do Your Research.
- What do you want? Is it realistic? → Research cafefully about what is in your range by seaching or talking to people in your profession.
- What will make you/them walk away from the table? → Research about the other, whether it's a person or a company. For example, researching about the company's policy is a good starting point.
- What rationale do you have to make them think it's worth it? → Build a solid rationale.

2. Prepare Mentally for the Negotiation.
- Negotiation are likely to get emotional. → Make a stategy to control it.
- One way is to have Defensive Pessimism: Expect obstacles. Prepare to face them.
- Another way is Emotional Detaching: Become less attached to any specific outcome. Your request CAN be denied, but it is not a measure of your worth.
- If you catch heat, you can try to pause the entire process and cool off.
3. Put yourself in other person's shoes.
- Think about the other person: What are they risking? What is their loss? What is their benefit?
- Express that you care for others: Don't only show your ambition. Show that you care about your team or the other person.
- Ask why and why not: It will make oppertunities for solutions.
