[Scenario] ReWind - A future-past novel about life

A woman who has a memory of the future. A memory about how she dies.

 

A man (Protagonist) is on the breakpoint after his father died. His father was a man who started from nothing and became a wealthy CEO. He did not forget about his roots, so he does lots of donations to foundations and government to help the poor. The man grew up under his wealth. Unlike his father, he does not have to work hard. He does not think about his future or life goals. However, when his father passed away, he did not leave him any property or wealth to him. The life he took for granted crumbles in front of him. Now, he must think about how to live his life. He quits university in despair but has no idea of what he should do.

 

On the day of his ‘first holiday’, A woman whom he does not know shows up in front of him. She then explains to him about her memory that came from the future. It is about her death. She is strangled bare-handed by the man. However, she cannot remember what their relationship was, or why he strangled her. Her other memories about it are vague, she can only recall some parts. She asks him to help her achieve her dream before she dies, and if possible, figure out what happened and stop her death from happening. The man did not believe her at first but changed his mind afterwards. After all, he did not have anything else to do.

 

In his mind, he suspects that the woman is somehow related with his father’s strange death. In order to find out the truth behind his father’s death, he agrees to help her.

 

They both try hard to learn about her death. In the investigation, he finds out that the place that she died was ‘Salar de Uyuni’ in Bolivia. They strive to get there, and in the middle of all this, he and she get close to each other. However, he sees some evidence that she is deeply related with his father. Why does she say about her own death? Why is she travelling with me? He keeps his distance and tries to find the truth.

 

After some time passed, he makes a theory.

‘She is the killer of my father. She is travelling with me to hide all the evidence and kill me, too.’

But love is cruel. He has started to like her, a woman who changed his life and gave him the needed strength to his life. He is disgusted with himself, but at the same time, feels the power of destiny.

 

Hardship pays off. The journey ends. The woman and the man arrive in Salar de Uyuni. It was the day before her death. He has already decided that his theory is real, but still cannot figure out why she keeps talking about her death, nor why she killed his father. She asks him to see the stars together outside in the night, and he felt that she will kill him now. He takes the pistol he secretly bought in Bolivia.

 

In the salt field, she talks about the destiny that puts everyone under pressure. The man thinks that she is readying to kill him now. He raises his pistol and aims it to her. However, she does not get angry nor confused by his ‘betrayal’. She just smiles and takes out a document for him to look. He looks at it and is deeply shocked. It is a diagnosis from a hospital, printed one year ago.

It said that she is destined to die in a year from colon cancer.

 

She lied about her ‘future memory’. All of it.

 

She was raised in a poor family, and her parents passed away when she was 17. The only thing she wanted was to have a happy college student life. Luckily, a scholarship foundation that the man’s father established gave her the needed tuitions for her to have a life at college. One day, the man’s father called her and told her that he is going to die in a few months from a hereditary disease. He is concerned about his son who still does not know how to live a life. He deeply regretted about how he has not raised his son more independent of him. He asks her to take care of his son and make him a fine man. She was already diagnosed with colon cancer at that time, but she hides it and agrees to do it. She already achieved her lifelong dream to have a college life, so she did not have any regrets about how to use her remaining life. She did not have anything left to do in the remaining year of her life, so she did what her ‘Dreamsaver’ asked her to. As much as the journey was a path to ‘maturing’ to the man, it was also the same to the woman, too.

 

After hearing about the truth, the man trembles in shock.

 

He was finally realizing that he can live on his own. He finally thought that he can be independent from his father, who was a great man unlike himself. But to think that this whole journey was also what his father planned……

Who was him? Can’t I live on my own? Is it utterly impossible to get out of my father’s shadows?

 

Despair, weakness.

The feelings that controlled him for a long time in the past returns.

 

He drops the gun…

…and puts out his hand to strangle her, bare hands.

 

At that moment, he realized that this tragedy, the ‘Memory of her future’ has indeed come true.

‘Is this what I really wanted? Is this the future we planned from the journey?’

The strength in his hand...... His hand……
